If you scan online pregnancy sites and popular baby retailers’ blogs; they will make you feel pretty stressed out about packing a hospital bag. Why? They absolutely over exaggerate just how much you need to bring with you on D-day. Take it from me-I packed way too much and spent more money than I needed to when packing my bag. After all was said and done, here are the things I feel are most important to have with you at the hospital!
- Bathrobe
Perfect for lounging, helpful for nursing, and ideal for basic coverage, coziness, and warmth; a plush bathrobe will be your best friend in the hospital. It’s easy to open, adjust, and it will allow you to forgo pants (which can really irritate a C-section) and cover up a nightgown.
Your Daily Basics
I thought I needed to buy stool softeners, nursing pads, numbing spray, pads, and other post-delivery items. However, the hospital had everything I needed, in excess; including undies (why ruin your own??)! All I would suggest bringing is your favorite face wash (sometimes the littlest things bring comfort), your toothbrush/paste, and contact stuff or glasses. Deodorant also obviously came in handy, as did my favorite shampoo; but again-not necessary if you want to skip this stuff. They hospital provided it all.
Three Pairs of Comfy Clothes
You certainly aren’t going to wear jeans, heels, and your best outfit in the hospital. But, you may want to bring a pretty pair of pajamas (for picture purposes) that are stretchy and soft. I made it a point to bring two pajama sets in case I had a post-partum bleeding incident ; and I had a pair of stretchy yoga pants to wear home with a soft, tunic on top. Think comfort, think simple, but don’t bring just one outfit-a few will do.
Baby Going Home Clothes
Your baby is going to be wrapped like a burrito in the swaddle blanket that the hospital provides during your stay. So, the only thing your baby really needs is an outfit to wear home. Be sure to bring a hat and an extra blanket to place on top of your carrier if you are bringing baby home during winter months.
Laptop
I was so glad I brought my lap top. Your baby will sleep most of your stay, and in between visitors, you tend to get pretty bored (when you’re not sleeping yourself). So, I had my lap top so I could post pics, check social media, read the news, listen to music, read about baby milestones, and watch Netflix-it was comforting to have one of my favorite items with me!
Slippers
The hospital will provide you with non-slip socks for sure. But, I found it kind of yucky to walk up and down the halls wearing them, and then climb under the covers with them. Invest in a nice pair of non-slip slippers to allow you to move freely, without getting germs or other hospital stuff on your bed sheets!
That’s it! Honestly, if I had to do it all again, I’d bring these six items and be totally fine! Packing is certainly a personal preference, but if you want to go bare minimum; I feel that these six items are all you need for a successful hospital stay!

There’s just something about spring that makes an expecting mommy want to jump up and clean (and clean, and clean). The weather is warming; the air is fresh and crisp; so it’s a great time to prep your home for your little bundle of joy. Here are some items to scrub and spaces to organize that will bring you instant joy (and the instant satisfaction of crossing items off of your long to-do list).
- 1.Wash Your Washer
Sounds crazy, but it actually makes sense. You’ll want to get your washer looking shiny and white, but also smelling as fresh as a daisy, rather than sniffing remnants of mildew (which can build up over time). Simply fill your washer with hot water and pour in a quart of chlorine bleach (let it sit for an hour). Run through a cycle and drain it. Then, fill it up with hot water again but this time, add a quart of distilled white vinegar and let it sit for one hour before draining. You can bust out your favorite cleaning rag to wipe down all the nooks and crannies; and voila! You have one ready washer for your delicate, baby items!
- 2.Create a Baby Closet
Have a closet in your kitchen or hall? Why not dedicate it to all things baby? A baby closet is great to have if you have multiple family members (like a spouse, parent, or in-law) who will be watching your child. It’s the one place they will have to look for diapers, wipes, baby food, snacks, wash cloths, medicine, etc. Start by obviously emptying out the closet and giving it a good scrubbing. Hang a shoe organizer over the back of the door and fill it with various items. Add some large, plastic storage drawers to hold large items, and you can even hang your baby’s coats in there, or place their shoes on a shoe rack on the floor. By creating a baby closet, you take the guess work out of looking for baby things, and you also have one neat and organized space!
- 3.Change the Air Filters
When’s the last time you changed your air filters? If you can’t remember, it’s time to do that today, to ensure your baby breathes nothing but the purest air as they enter your home. Be wise and bulk up on filters to ensure you have plenty on hand since you may be limited on time once your bundle of joy arrives.
- 4.Pre-Wash Baby Items
Now that your washer is sparkly clean, be sure to utilize the time that you have to wash your baby’s clothes, sheets, and blankets. You’ll be doing an insane amount of laundry once your tot arrives, so cut down on your workload later by washing your essential items now. You can even iron, fold, or hang them so they’re ready to be worn!
- 5.Move Your Furniture
If you’re like most people, you probably don’t move large pieces of furniture every time you run the vacuum. Before the baby comes, make it a point to do a deep floor cleaning (since they will be spending a lot of time on their tummy, on the floor). Get some help and move your couch, dressers, tables, and bed so you can literally suck up dust and dirt in every spare inch of your home! You’ll be disgusted at the amount of dirt you extract but satisfied with all the cleaning you’ve accomplished.
When you’re pregnant, you have big hopes, big feelings, and big desires-to clean literally everything you come in contact with. Allow spring to inspire you and help make all your cleaning aspirations come true.

As a mom (or mom-to-be), you deserve the best! After all, you are constantly busy taking care of everyone and everything in your homestead. Now, it’s time to take care of you! Here are some awesome Mother’s Day ideas (or hints to drop) that include some major pampering and lots of luxury for the expecting mother in your life.
- Silk Pajamas
Hello, comfort; hello style! Asking for (or gifting) silk pajamas will score lots of brownie points. Why? When pregnant, the body heats up tremendously due to shifting hormones. Silk tends to keep the body nice and cool throughout the evening. Opt for a button down top to make nursing a cinch!
Organic Facial
The skin is the biggest organ, so you have to take care of what you put on it; especially when pregnant since it absorbs everything. Consider asking for an organic facial, since pregnancy can do a number on your skin. Good for you ingredients will be used to clear up blemishes, add moisture, and make skin soft and smooth. Plus, the application itself is totally relaxing!
Sheepskin Slippers
Are your feet feeling the extra pressure from your growing baby bump? Why not give them a break? High quality slippers make an excellent Mother’s Day gift, since feet tend to throb after the second trimester (and shoes also fit more snugly). Slippers can also be worn in the hospital, and when lounging around post-delivery at home. Splurge on a supremely soft pair that is adorned with sheepskin and stitched by hand!
Subscription Box
Who doesn’t love getting a package in the mail regularly each month? Browse the dozens of subscriptions boxes available to you (be sure to check out breastfeeding subscription boxes if planning on nursing). They’ll be filled with customized treats and tidbits that are sure to bring a smile to your face, month after month for the whole year.
Cleaning Company
When pregnant, no one really feels like cleaning (unless you’re in the midst of your nesting phase). Plus, being around lots of chemicals is dangerous to your developing baby. Kick your feet up and request a cleaning company make your house spotless for the duration of your pregnancy (or even the first few months after). You’ll have more time to focus on setting up your nursery, relaxing your body, and doing the things that you enjoy the most; rather than cleaning!
Roses, massage, and dinners out are nice. But, the five gifts above are sure to make any pregnant woman’s heart flutter. Whether you’re the gift-er or gift-ee; make this Mother’s Day the best one yet for the special, expecting person in your life!

The dad in your life will love the basket and will be able to use all of the customizable items.
- Shower Him With Sports
Get your dad-to-be tickets to his favorite sports team’s game. You can go with him, or send him off with his friends so he can celebrate his new status with his friends and family. Place the tickets in a Father’s Day care and even send him to the game with some extra cash in tow, so he can treat himself to lunch and drinks.
- Dine In
You may not be feeling up to dining out anywhere, but on Father’s Day; visit his favorite restaurant to place a to-go order so you can dine in. He’ll love that the meal is all about him! Also, be sure to save room for dessert because you’ll bake him a First Father’s Day cake to consume at the end of the meal (don’t forget to photograph it!).
- Cute Saying Onesie

It can be something like, “Dad’s best bud” or “Future Hunting Partner;” or whatever else would apply to him, his likes, and lifestyle. He’ll love getting the baby dressed in it and will appreciate the nod to him on Father’s Day.

- Cook Ahead of Time
Cook a few different types of meals (lasagna, casseroles, soups) that freeze well. This way you don’t have to worry about cooking anything and will have more time tending to the baby and getting acclimated to your new life.
Hire a Pet Sitter
Pets certainly feel slighted when a baby is brought home. Think ahead by hiring a pet sitter. They can take your dog on a walk, give the cat some attention, and simply take them off your hands for a bit.
Bringing home a baby can be exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. Be sure you complete these simply tasks prior to the birth to ensure you’re ahead of the game and prepared for whatever comes your way.

- Shop Consignment
Baby clothes are very cute but can be very expensive. Why pay hundreds for designer duds when you can shop consignment? Babies grow so quickly, they hardly wear an outfit more than once. And, this is good news for you if you’re shopping second hand. You can find top brands and designer names in these shops and the quality of clothes is still top notch.
In addition to clothing, baby toys are abundant in consignment shops. You can find everything from doll houses to puzzles; bouncers and play mats. These items have also been lightly used and are marked down for a fraction of the price. And, if you establish a client connection with the shop, you can bring your own used items to it in order to get money back on any items that you list with them and they sell. It’s a win-win situation.

Diapers? Yes, you’ll need them-lots of them. Wipes? Yup, you’ll need those too. Also, add diaper rash cream, baby shampoo, baby laundry detergent, and formula (if you’re not nursing) to the list. Shop online for these items to save top dollar and buy in bulk. You’ll get an even better price if you subscribe to any of these items. That means you’ll get a monthly delivery at your door and you’ll have hundreds of bucks a year.
- Skip Daycare
Daycares have their pros, but they also have their cons. One of them is the cost to watch your baby per week. Expect to pay on average between $300 a week. And, you don’t get that money back if you miss a week or a few days due to sickness or vacation; in order to hold your baby’s spot. It is much more cost effective to hire a home care sitter. This means having someone come to your home, or you dropping your baby off at their home. Home sitters charge about $25-$30 a day. And, they are pretty flexible if you need to cancel or shift days around.
Nurse Your Baby
Breastfeeding has benefits for both mom and baby. But, one of the biggest benefits is it being an affordable feeding option. Formula can run anywhere from $15-$40 a canister (depending on if your baby needs a specialized formula), but breastmilk is free. And, it’s made specifically for your baby’s needs. You can pump to stockpile your supply, and breastmilk is able and safe to be put in the freezer for future use. Don’t have cash to buy a pump? Check with your insurance company. Many provide a pump for free!
- Cut Other Expenses
You can cut expenses around the house to free up more money for your baby in your budget. Do you really need television? You’ll probably be too busy and too tired taking care of your newborn! If you cut the cable, you can subscribe to ala cart tv, like Sling; where you pay $25 a month to select a few channels. You can sign up for Netflix, or even watch tv or movies using your Amazon Prime account. The point is, start getting creative when it comes to determining what you need or don’t need around your home!
Babies need love and care. While extrinsic items are nice, they aren’t really a necessity. Consider these five tips to cut down on costs and free up some more room in your monthly budget when you have a baby!
